Werner Enterprises is a premier transportation and logistics company engaged in hauling truckload shipments of general commodities in both interstate and intrastate commerce and provides logistics services.The company operates throughout the 48 contiguous states pursuant to operating authority, both common and contract, granted by the US Department of Transportation (DOT) and pursuant to intrastate authority granted by various states. Werner operates 24,855 trailers. This total is comprised of 23,109 dry vans; 501 flatbeds; and 1,245 temperature-controlled trailers.
Werner also has authority to operate in the several provinces of Canada, and to provide through-trailer service in and out of Mexico. It has recently opened an office in China. It has a fleet of 8,250 trucks, of which 7,470 were owned by the company and 780 were owned and operated by owner-operators (independent contractors).
The company’s operations are divided into two principal segments: Transportation Services and Value Added Services.
Truckload segment provides specialized services to customers based on their trailer needs (such as van, flatbed and temperature-controlled trailers); geographic area; time-sensitive nature of shipments (expedited shipments); or conversion of the private fleet to the Company (dedicated services).
The truckload transportation services segment consists of six operating fleets which include dedicated, medium/long-haul van, regional short-haul, expedited, flatbed and temperature-controlled fleets. The Dedicated Services fleet provides truckload services required by a specific company, plant, or distribution center. The medium-to-long-haul Van fleet transports a variety of consumer, nondurable products and other commodities in truckload quantities over irregular routes using dry van trailers.
The Regional Short-Haul fleet provides comparable truckload van service within five geographic regions. The Expedited fleet provides time-sensitive truckload services utilizing driver teams. The Flatbed and Temperature-Controlled fleets provide truckload services for products with specialized trailers. The principal types of freight transported by the company include retail store merchandise, consumer products, manufactured products, and grocery products.
Werner’s VAS segment manages the transportation and logistics requirements for individual customers. VAS services include truck brokerage, freight management, intermodal, load/mode and network optimization and international.The VAS international services include site selection analysis, vendor and purchase order management, full container load consolidation and warehousing, door-to-door freight forwarding and customs brokerage. These VAS international services are provided throughout North America, Asia, Europe and South America.The company’s truck brokerage division has contracts with over 8,500 carriers as of December 2007.
Werner, through its subsidiary companies, is a licensed US NVOCC, US Customs Broker, licensed Freight Forwarder in China, licensed China NVOCC, a TSA approved Indirect Air Carrier and an IATA Accredited Cargo Agent.
